Bringing Science Solutions to the World!

The Earth Sciences Division is seeking a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in hydrogeology and/or geochemistry, and a strong interest in advancing reactive transport numerical modeling with applications to geothermal energy and CO2 geological sequestration. The position offers an excellent environment for working with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team and will require strong motivation and excellent oral and written communication skills. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a renowned center of scientific expertise in the many facets of energy related fundamental and applied science.

The successful candidate will mainly work on enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) using CO2 as working fluid (CO2-EGS), to support the design and analysis of laboratory CO2-EGS fluid-rock reaction experiments, to determine thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of mineral phases from laboratory and field observations, and to identify optimal sites for CO2-EGS field demonstration. The candidate may also work on conventional water-based hydrothermal and EGS systems, on CO2 geological sequestration, and on other projects that require reactive transport modeling.

As a Postdoc you will:

  • Develop new conceptual models and implement them into numerical geochemical transport models.
  • Evaluate thermodynamic and kinetic data as needed for geochemical computations.
  • Evaluate multi-phase flow and transport data.
  • Work as a member of a large multidisciplinary research team.
  • Author technical reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Key Success Factors

  • A recent Ph.D. (within the last two years or to be completed within a few months) in hydrogeology, geochemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, geology, or a related field.
  • Some knowledge and background in modeling multi-phase flow and/or reactive transport.
  • Experience with TOUGHREACT or other multi-phase reactive transport simulators is preferred.
  • Experience in geothermal energy development and/or CO2 geological sequestration.
  • Expertise in Fortran programming is a plus.
  • Demonstrated record of productivity in setting up and conducting numerical modeling, with limited supervision.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems, to use observational data for improving models, and implement alternative solutions.
  • Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, and to author technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.

Notes
This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based on performance, funding, and continued operational needs.

To apply: Apply directly online and follow the online instructions to complete the application process. As part of the online application process, please submit a single attachment that includes both your resume or CV and a statement of your research interests.
