Two Postdoctoral Postions in Microbiology, Metabolism, and Aging
Two Postdoctoral Postions in Microbiology, Metabolism, and Aging
Description:
Two postdoctoral positions are available immediately in the laboratory of Prof. William Ja at The Scripps Research Institute (Jupiter, Florida). Ideal candidates will be capable of establishing independent research projects and work well with scientific colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Position 1: Interactions of symbiotic microorganisms with Drosophila
These studies will establish the relationship between the fly microbiome, nutrition, and host health and aging. Projects include phylogenetic and genomic studies, experiments on host and bacterial gene expression, and biochemical studies of candidate host mechanisms for modulating the gut microbiota. Candidates will have experience in a subset of fields including microbial ecology, virology, and nutritional science. Previous molecular experience in insect systems is ideal.
Position 2: Genetic pathways involved with aging and metabolism
Initially, studies will focus on genetic and biochemical approaches to characterize fly genes that modulate longevity in response to nutrition. Long-term projects include the application of large-scale methods (metabolomics, lipidomics) on Drosophila mutants, and the investigation of small molecule-modulators of mitochondrial function in cell culture models. Candidates should have experience in a subset of fields including biochemistry, nutrigenomics, and cell biology, as well as knowledge of metabolic pathways and their analysis (nutritional or mitochondrial metabolism). Previous experience with Drosophila genetics and cell culture is desirable, but not essential. A strong interest in drug discovery is encouraged.
