A Research Studentship position in Interacting Turbulent Flames by EPSRC

A Research Studentship position is available on a research project funded by EPSRC in the study of the interaction of turbulent flames using DNS and laser diagnostics. The project involves collaboration with Rolls-Royce Plc. And Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd in the United Kingdom.

The project’s main objective is to develop an understanding of the close interaction turbulent premixed flame using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of the methodology of diagnosis and laser. The interaction flames are one of the root causes of “noisy” burn, but there is still a terra incognita for modeling. The student research will be involved in the experimental part of the project, but there will be a constant interaction between experiment and calculation of parts.

The PhD student will work closely with one of the investigators and will be used to the state of the art multi-scalar imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) facilities available in the engineering department.

The successful candidate will have a first-class degree Mechanical / Aerospace / Chemical Engineering. Applications of students from abroad will also be considered. The funding, which covers all the costs of maintenance and will be available for three years. The course will start from 1 October 2008.

Further details about the project may be obtained from Dr. E. Mastorakos or Dr N. Swaminathan.
