British Chevening Scholarships Malaysia Programme 2008/2009

The British Government offers British Chevening Scholarship available for Malaysian students who dedicate to continue their study at postgraduate level.

This competitive scholarship scheme is funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office of the British Government to provide an opportunity to outstanding young Malaysians, from a variety of fields, to further their studies in Britain at a university of their own choice.

The Malaysia Programme is part of the global programme of British Chevening Scholarships. Chevening is the country house in Kent which is the official residence of the Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs.

Malaysia continues to be one of the main recipients of Chevening Scholarships globally. During the 21 years of the Scheme’s operation, 1,091 Malaysians have been given awards to study in the UK - 225 undergraduates (who no longer benefit from the Scheme), 615 for a Masters or Postgraduate Diploma (the main recipients now), 102 at PhD level (no longer awarded), 133 on short postgraduate courses or research attachments and 16 on the new Chevening Fellowships - at a total cost to the British Government of around RM49.6 million.

How many scholarships are awarded?

Awards are now given only at Masters level or for short postgraduate courses. A number of Chevening Scholarships are Partnership Awards and the High Commission is pleased to acknowledge their support of the 2008 Chevening Programme.

What do the scholarships cover?

Scholarships are fully-funded awards (with the exception of business school programmes, where the fees element of the scholarship is capped at £12,000), covering the university tuition fee, a monthly living allowance and a return air-fare to Britain.

Chevening however, does not cover professional courses and very rarely funds, part-time or distance learning UK postgraduate programmes.

Who should apply?

Any young Malaysian with drive and determination.

Chevening scholarships are awarded only to the brightest and the best. Successful candidates will have - or expect to obtain - a good academic record (a first degree with at least Upper Second Honours). They will also have a strong personality as well as ambition and leadership skills. Applicants with a Lower Second degree but with impressive career achievements may also apply.

Successful candidates will be intending to return to work in Malaysia on completion of their studies. We aim to attract Malaysia’s future leaders in their respective fields, people who will have influence and make a difference.

While there is no age limit, most successful candidates are aged between 25 and 35. This scholarship is not for fresh graduates.

How can I apply?

Applications for the 2008/2009 academic year are now open. The deadlines for applications are 17 September (Government servants) or 8 October (general public). Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu early the following year.

Please note that hard copies of the application form are no longer available at the High Commission or British Council offices. Applications must be made online. We regret that we are unable to accept hardcopy applications, although there is an option to print the application form for manual completion on the online application system.
